**Melbourne, Australia:** Australia ended Day 1 of the fourth Ashes Test against India in a commanding position, reaching 311/6 despite India taking six wickets. Four Australian batsmen registered half-centuries, showcasing a strong batting performance.

Sam Khawaja (57) and Marcus Labuschagne (72) provided a solid opening partnership, setting the tone for the day. Khawaja’s innings marked his first fifty of the series. Labuschagne, too, contributed a significant score. Steve Smith added another fifty (56) to his impressive series tally, while Travis Head’s short stay at the crease was ended by Jasprit Bumrah.

Bumrah was the pick of the Indian bowlers, claiming three wickets, including those of Head and Mitchell Marsh (4). Washington Sundar also chipped in with a crucial wicket, removing Labuschagne. Akash Deep took the wicket of Alex Carey (31), however, India struggled to maintain consistent pressure after taking early wickets.

Despite India’s initial success in securing three quick wickets, Australia rebuilt their innings steadily. A partnership of over 40 runs between Smith and Carey solidified Australia’s position.

The match is part of a five-test series, currently tied 1-1 after India won the first match, Australia won the second and the third match ended in a draw. The Boxing Day Test will be crucial for both teams as they look to gain a lead in the series.
