Tue Dec 24 11:49:19 UTC 2024: ## IndiGo Dominates Indian Skies as Domestic Air Travel Soars

**New Delhi, December 24, 2024** – India’s domestic air passenger numbers saw a significant surge in November, reaching 1.42 crore (14.2 million), a 12% increase compared to the same month last year, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This growth continues a trend of rising air travel demand, with January-November 2024 seeing a 5.91% year-on-year increase in passenger numbers.

IndiGo maintained its dominant position, commanding 63.6% of the domestic market share. Air India followed with 24.4%, while Akasa Air held 4.7% and SpiceJet 3.1%. Alliance Air’s share remained unchanged at 0.7%. Although all major carriers saw their market share increase, the on-time performance (OTP) of several airlines suffered. IndiGo recorded a 74.5% OTP, while Akasa Air and SpiceJet achieved 66.4% and 62.5%, respectively. Air India and Alliance Air lagged behind with OTPs of 58.8% and 58.9%.

The lower OTP resulted in significant passenger disruptions. Over 224,900 passengers experienced flight delays, costing airlines approximately ₹2.90 crore (approximately $350,000 USD) in facilitation fees. Furthermore, 3,539 passengers were denied boarding, incurring ₹2.84 crore (approximately $340,000 USD) in compensation and facilities. Flight cancellations impacted 27,577 passengers, leading to an additional ₹36.79 lakh (approximately $44,000 USD) in airline expenses. A total of 624 passenger-related complaints were filed last month. The completion of the Air India-Vistara merger in November is expected to further reshape the domestic aviation landscape in the coming months.
