Tue Dec 24 12:50:00 UTC 2024: **United Airlines Upgrades Polaris Business Class Wine Selection with Premium Brands**
**CHICAGO, December 23, 2024** – United Airlines is significantly upgrading its Polaris business class wine offering, starting January 1, 2025. The airline will introduce Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée champagne, a retail $55 bottle, along with three other high-end wines: Luca G Lot Chardonnay (retailing over $30), Freemark Abbey Cabernet Sauvignon ($60), and Guigal Châteauneuf-du-Pape ($50). This move represents a substantial investment in the premium passenger experience, positioning United ahead of competitors like Delta and American Airlines, according to industry expert Gary Leff.
Leff, a leading authority on frequent flyer programs and business travel, notes that while Delta is also improving its wine selection with a partnership with Taittinger, United’s choices are more extensive and luxurious. He contrasts this positively with American Airlines’ recent downgrade of its wine program, including the elimination of champagne in business class.
While the overall cost of the new wine selection remains undisclosed, Leff emphasizes that the quality upgrade significantly enhances the Polaris experience. He suggests that although the average passenger may not be acutely aware of the price point of individual bottles, the perceived luxury improves the overall perception of the service. This upgrade follows a period where United had focused on cost-cutting measures, including their wine program. The new offerings are part of United’s broader strategy to elevate its premium services and attract a more affluent clientele.
United’s decision is particularly significant in the context of its competitive landscape, with Delta’s president acknowledging at their investor day that they still have a long way to go to match United’s offerings. Leff highlights United’s already strong position as America’s most profitable airline (excluding credit card revenue) and this investment solidifies their premium positioning.
