**Kuwait City, Kuwait** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kuwait on Saturday for a two-day visit, marking the first trip by an Indian Prime Minister to the Gulf nation in 43 years. The visit, at the invitation of Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, aims to bolster the already strong relationship between India and Kuwait across various sectors, including trade, defense, and energy.
PM Modi received a warm welcome upon arrival, highlighting the significance of the visit. He emphasized the shared interests of both nations in regional peace, security, and stability, particularly relevant given recent events in West Asia, including the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria.
During his visit, PM Modi addressed a large gathering of the Indian diaspora at a “Hala Modi” event, expressing gratitude for their contributions to both India and Kuwait. He highlighted the deep historical ties between the two countries, dating back to robust 19th-century trade relations. He also praised the Indian community’s capabilities and urged them to remain actively involved in India’s development. A Kuwaiti singer even performed the Indian patriotic song “Saare Jahan Se Accha” following Modi’s speech, underscoring the warm reception.
The Prime Minister’s itinerary included attending the opening ceremony of the Arabian Gulf Cup football tournament and visiting an Indian labor camp, where he interacted with workers. He also engaged with individuals who translated the Ramayana and Mahabharata into Arabic, showcasing the cultural exchange between the nations.
The visit comes amidst growing cooperation between India and Kuwait, with recent high-level exchanges between foreign ministers from both countries. The strengthening of bilateral ties is expected to significantly impact trade relations, with current bilateral trade valued at USD 10.47 billion. PM Modi’s visit is expected to lay the groundwork for future partnerships, further solidifying the relationship between the two nations. While celebrating the visit, the Congress party criticized the timing, highlighting ongoing issues in Manipur.
