Sat Dec 21 23:08:17 UTC 2024: ## World Meditation Day Celebrated Globally by Indian Missions

**New Delhi, Dec 21 (IANS)** – Indian diplomatic missions worldwide marked the inaugural World Meditation Day on Saturday, highlighting meditation’s benefits for mental and physical well-being. The day, designated by a UN General Assembly resolution spearheaded by India and several other nations, coincided with the Winter Solstice.

A major event was held at the United Nations in New York, featuring participation from UN officials and spiritual leaders. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, emphasized the ancient Indian practice of Dhyana (meditation) as a path to inner peace.

Celebrations were diverse and included guided meditation sessions at various Indian consulates and embassies, including those in Laos, Nepal, Brazil, South Africa, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan. Many events partnered with organizations like the Art of Living, promoting the practice to local communities. The Indian Embassy in Argentina planned a future event combining yoga, cuisine, and cultural elements.

The events underscored the global recognition of meditation’s potential to foster peace, harmony, and individual well-being, reflecting India’s “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” philosophy – the world is one family. The Winter Solstice was highlighted as an auspicious time for reflection in Indian tradition.
