Mon Dec 16 08:41:04 UTC 2024: ## Ukraine Claims Major Victories as Russia Reports Gains in Eastern Donbas
**Kyiv, Ukraine –** The war in Ukraine raged on its 1026th day, with both sides claiming significant battlefield successes and escalating attacks. Monday saw a flurry of reports from both sides, painting a complex picture of the ongoing conflict.
Russia’s defense ministry announced the capture of several villages in the Donetsk region – Shevchenko, Veselyi Hai, and Pushkino – and claimed to have destroyed four Ukrainian Patriot air defense systems. However, these claims remain unverified. The ministry also reported that its overnight drone attack on Ukraine involved 49 drones, with Ukraine’s military reporting the interception of 27.
Ukraine, however, countered with its own claims of significant successes. The Ukrainian military intelligence service reported inflicting heavy casualties on a contingent of North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russian forces in the Kursk region. They claimed to have killed or wounded at least 30 North Korean troops. Additionally, Ukraine’s SBU security service launched an operation targeting 40 railcars transporting fuel to Russian troops in Zaporizhzhia. A Ukrainian drone strike also hit a Russian National Guard facility in Chechnya.
Further bolstering Ukraine’s claims, Al Jazeera reported that according to their Kyiv-based reporter, no Russian naval vessels are currently patrolling the Black Sea, a significant blow to Russia’s naval capabilities.
Despite these setbacks, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed Russia captured 189 Ukrainian settlements this year, declaring 2024 a “landmark year” for achieving the war’s objectives. Meanwhile, Russia’s foreign intelligence chief denied any contact with the CIA regarding recent long-range strikes into Russian territory.
In a show of continued international support, Norway pledged $242.38 million to strengthen the Ukrainian navy, aiming to deter future Russian naval aggression and protect Ukrainian grain exports. The ongoing conflict continues to generate considerable uncertainty, with both sides engaged in a war of words and actions.
