**Villupuram, Tamil Nadu, December 13, 2024** – Villupuram Member of Parliament D. Ravikumar has called on the Union Government to pass a law specifically protecting the rights of domestic workers in India. In a letter to Union Minister of Labour and Employment Mansukh Mandaviya, Mr. Ravikumar highlighted the inadequacy of current measures, despite some states implementing minimum wages and coverage under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at the Workplace Act. He cited the lack of effective enforcement mechanisms as a major flaw.
Mr. Ravikumar emphasized the unique challenges faced by domestic workers, whose employment often takes place within private homes, excluding them from the protections afforded by existing labor laws and the recently introduced Labour Codes. He specifically noted the omission of domestic workers from the Code on Occupational Health and Safety.
The MP’s demands include a comprehensive new law, interim registration of domestic workers with the Labour Department, effective minimum wage enforcement, and inclusion of domestic workers in the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) and Provident Fund (PF) schemes to provide crucial social security benefits. He underscored the ongoing advocacy of the National Platform for Domestic Workers, a coalition of unions across the country, for such legislation.
