**Belagavi, Karnataka – December 12, 2024** – The Karnataka Legislative Assembly was thrown into chaos today following a protest by the Panchamasali Lingayat sect demanding increased reservation quotas. The BJP opposition demanded an inquiry into a police lathi-charge on protesters outside the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, while the ruling government refused, leading to a BJP walkout.
The heated debate saw clashes between ruling and opposition members. BJP leaders accused police of excessive force and violating protocol, alleging “high-handedness” in dispersing the crowd. Home Minister G. Parameshwara rejected calls for an inquiry, stating that video evidence shows protesters throwing stones and footwear, and that no police officer acted improperly.
BJP MLA Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal, in remarks that sparked further disorder, accused the government of appeasing one community and questioned the constitutionality of the existing 4% Muslim reservation in the 2B category. He further claimed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had previously resolved a similar impasse regarding Panchamasali reservations during the previous BJP government’s tenure. Mr. Yatnal’s comments prompted objections from the Home Minister and a demand for a judicial probe by the Leader of Opposition, R. Ashok.
The Legislative Council also saw protests, leading to adjournment until Friday when the issue will be further debated. The incident highlights the ongoing tension over reservation policies in Karnataka and the deep divisions within the state legislature.
