Tue Dec 10 05:32:29 UTC 2024: ## Syrian Rebel Leader Overthrows Assad Regime, Promises Accountability for Atrocities

**Damascus, Syria –** In a stunning turn of events, Syrian rebel leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, also known as Ahmed al-Sharaa, has led a swift military offensive that toppled the decades-long Assad regime. Bashar al-Assad has reportedly fled the country, marking the end of his family’s 50-year rule.

Al-Jolani, who now leads the new government, met with outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jalali to ensure a smooth transition of power and the continued provision of essential services. A statement released by the rebels emphasizes the new government’s commitment to holding accountable those responsible for the widespread torture and abuses under the Assad regime, specifically targeting senior officials, security personnel, and army officers.

The Assad regime’s brutal crackdown on dissent since 2011 resulted in an estimated half a million deaths and forced millions to flee the country. While Assad, aided by Russia and Iran, successfully resisted rebel forces for over a decade, the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza created an opportunity for the rebels to launch a successful offensive.

The regime change has ignited hope among thousands held in Syrian prisons, many of whom were imprisoned for expressing dissent. Crowds gathered outside notorious prisons like Saydnaya, infamous for its human rights abuses, searching for missing relatives. Reports indicate over 100,000 inmates perished in Syrian prisons under Assad’s rule, with tens of thousands dying at Saydnaya alone.

Survivors escaping from the now-abandoned prisons bear visible signs of torture and starvation. Many Syrian citizens, previously silenced by fear, are expressing relief and hope for a new beginning.

While the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously designated a terrorist organization, spearheaded the offensive, the new government has garnered cautious support from some international powers. Germany and France have expressed willingness to cooperate on the basis of human rights and minority protection. However, the UK and US have conditioned their engagement on HTS renouncing terrorism and preventing the resurgence of ISIS, respectively. The UN has called for accountability for the Assad regime’s actions. The Kremlin has yet to confirm reports that Assad has sought refuge in Russia. The world watches as Syria begins a difficult path toward rebuilding and reconciliation.
