**London, December 9, 2024** – The United Kingdom is considering lifting its ban on the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) militant group following the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria. The group, proscribed in 2017 for its al-Qaeda links, played a significant role in Assad’s downfall.
Cabinet Office Minister Pat McFadden stated that a decision on lifting the ban would be made swiftly if the situation in Syria stabilizes and assurances regarding the protection of minorities and citizens are met. He emphasized the fluidity of the situation and the uncertainty surrounding future events. McFadden also indicated that the UK would consider lifting the ban if HTS assumes control of Syria, noting that while the group’s leader, Abu Muhammad al-Jolani, is currently making positive statements, careful consideration of future actions is necessary.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed the fall of the “barbaric” Assad regime, emphasizing the need for a political solution, peace, stability, and protection for civilians and minorities. He also called for aid to reach those in need.
Meanwhile, Mr. McFadden confirmed that Asma al-Assad, the British wife of the ousted Syrian president, has not requested to return to the UK. The Assad family is currently in Russia, having been granted political asylum.
