**VISAKHAPATNAM, December 8, 2024** – Visakhapatnam city police launched a 16-day road safety training program for auto-rickshaw drivers on Sunday, aiming to curb accidents. The initiative, inaugurated by Home Minister V. Anitha, will train approximately 250 drivers daily. The program comes in response to a concerning number of accidents involving auto-rickshaws in 2024: 80 accidents resulting in 19 fatalities and 61 non-fatal injuries.

Commissioner of Police Shankabratha Bagchi highlighted the importance of the program, emphasizing the need to reduce accidents, particularly those involving school children. He also stressed the program’s role in fostering better police-driver collaboration for crime prevention and detection.

The comprehensive training will cover defensive driving techniques, speed management, traffic regulations, and relevant legal aspects. Instruction will be provided by various experts, including the Visakhapatnam Deputy Transport Commissioner and experienced traffic police officials. Minister Anitha also engaged with drivers to address their concerns. With approximately 4,000 auto-rickshaws operating within the city, the program aims to significantly improve road safety.
