Sun Dec 08 00:22:38 UTC 2024: ## Rebel Forces Encircle Damascus, Seizing Homs and Advancing on Capital

**BEIRUT** – Rebel forces have launched a stunning offensive across Syria, seizing the strategically vital city of Homs and encircling the capital, Damascus, in a dramatic escalation of the country’s long-running civil war. The lightning-fast advance has left the regime of President Bashar al-Assad teetering on the brink of collapse, prompting a mass exodus of Syrian soldiers and raising serious questions about the future of the conflict.

Insurgents, spearheaded by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), overwhelmed Syrian army defenses in Homs on Saturday, capturing security branches and conducting sweeping operations to secure the city. The speed of the takeover surprised observers, as Homs served as a crucial link between Damascus and Assad’s coastal strongholds of Tartus and Latakia. This key supply route is now severed.

The assault on Homs followed similar gains elsewhere. Rebel groups in southern Syria routed government forces in Daraa and Sweida, advancing to within 5 miles of Damascus. Further east, rebels seized the ancient city of Palmyra. Reports indicate that as many as 2,000 Syrian soldiers fled across the border into Iraq.

The rapid rebel advances have left Damascus isolated, with opposition forces closing in from the north, south, and east. International allies of the Assad regime, including Russia and Iran, have reportedly offered little direct military support. Hezbollah, despite pledging support, has been unable to provide significant reinforcements.

Amid the chaos, videos circulating online show the toppling of statues of former president Hafez al-Assad and regime police officers removing their uniforms. Rebels also released prisoners from government jails known for torture, prompting scenes of jubilation and relief. In Damascus, residents described widespread panic and a mass exodus. While Syrian state media denies Assad has fled, the uncertainty surrounding his fate is palpable.

Rebel commanders have called for government forces to surrender, emphasizing a desire to avoid further bloodshed and offering assurances of safety.

International concern is mounting. The Astana process, a peace initiative for Syria, has called for a cessation of hostilities and a political solution to the crisis. Millions of Syrian refugees are anxiously watching the unfolding events, hoping for a chance to return home after more than a decade of conflict.
