**Paris, France** – After five years of extensive restoration following a devastating fire, the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is set to reopen its doors to the public on December 7th, 2024. French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife toured the newly restored cathedral on Friday, praising the work of over 1,200 artisans and the 340,000 donors who contributed nearly $1 billion to the restoration effort.
Macron described the 2019 fire, which caused the collapse of the cathedral’s spire and significant damage to its structure and artifacts, as a “national wound.” He lauded the cathedral as “the soul of our country” and expressed his gratitude for the meticulous work undertaken to restore the Gothic masterpiece.
The restoration involved replacing 1,300 damaged stones, cleaning and restoring 8,000 pipes in the Grand Organ, and installing a new spire and three new bells, including one used during the recent Olympics. The cathedral also boasts a newly designed altar by French artist Guillaume Bardet. While some stained glass, paintings, and tapestries suffered damage, relics such as the Crown of Thorns were saved.
Investigators believe the 2019 fire was accidental. The reopening of Notre Dame, a UNESCO World Heritage site that previously attracted over 13 million visitors annually, marks a significant moment for France and the global community.
