**Tucson, AZ –** A former Arizona Senate candidate, 68-year-old John McLean, was killed in a car crash early Friday morning on Broadway Boulevard in Tucson. Tucson Police Department (TPD) reports that McLean was struck by a vehicle driven by 27-year-old Michael Martin Creel, who ran a stop sign on Ridgeside Drive.

Creel, who sustained minor injuries, was arrested and charged with manslaughter and aggravated DUI. Police determined he was driving under the influence at the time of the collision. Speed is also being investigated as a contributing factor.

McLean, a third-generation Arizonan and founder of Arete Associates, a national security technology firm, had recently run for State Senate in District 17. He was a dedicated community volunteer and served on several non-profit boards. His campaign website highlighted his commitment to education, environmental sustainability, and animal welfare. He lost the election to Republican Vince Leach.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
