Fri Nov 15 05:12:14 UTC 2024: ## North Korea Unveils Suicide Drones, Kim Jong Un Orders Mass Production

**SEOUL, November 15, 2024:** North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered the mass production of suicide attack drones after witnessing a successful test of the weapons system on Thursday. The drones, designed to explode on impact, were showcased in photos released by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The test comes amidst heightened tensions in the region, with the United States, South Korea, and Japan conducting joint military exercises in nearby international waters. The exercises, involving advanced fighter jets and a U.S. aircraft carrier, are a clear display of their defense posture against North Korea.

Kim Jong Un expressed satisfaction with the drones’ development, emphasizing their low cost and potential for wide-ranging military applications. The KCNA report did not explicitly mention South Korea as the intended target for the drones, but the North has previously accused South Korea of sending propaganda leaflets into its territory and threatened retaliation.

North Korea’s latest military demonstration, including the development of nuclear-capable weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles, has fueled regional anxieties. Concerns are also mounting over reports that North Korea is supplying military equipment and personnel to Russia in support of its war in Ukraine.

South Korean officials anticipate that North Korea’s aggressive military activities will be a key topic at the upcoming trilateral summit between South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, U.S. President Joe Biden, and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

The U.S. State Department expressed “strong concerns” over deepening ties between North Korea and Russia, particularly the deployment of North Korean troops to support the war in Ukraine, during a meeting between South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
