**Mumbai, India** – Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has admitted that fielding his wife, Sunetra Pawar, against his cousin Supriya Sule in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections was a mistake. Supriya Sule, daughter of NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar, defeated Sunetra Pawar by a margin of over 1.5 lakh votes in the Baramati Lok Sabha seat.
“It was my mistake to field her against Supriya Sule,” Pawar told NDTV. “I have told you again and again. It is over now.” He further stated that he is currently focused on campaigning for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections, where the NCP is part of the Mahayuti alliance.
Pawar acknowledged the presence of political families in major parties like Congress, BJP, Shiv Sena, and MNS, stating that ultimately, the voters decide whether candidates from political families deserve their support.
“The BJP speaks against nepotism, but in this election, both the Mahavikas Aghadi and the Mahayuti alliances have numerous candidates from political families,” he said. “This trend has been part of Indian politics for decades.”
Despite this, Pawar expressed strong confidence in his own candidacy, claiming a 100% victory in the upcoming assembly elections. He attributed this confidence to his own popularity and his belief that he will be able to secure his seat.
The Maharashtra assembly elections will be held on November 20, with the Mahayuti coalition (BJP, Shiv Sena, NCP) facing off against the Mahavikas Aghadi alliance (Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP factions). The outcome will determine the fate of 288 seats and the future of the state government.
