Tue Nov 12 09:38:56 UTC 2024: ## Chennai Bathed in Heavy Rains, Orange Alert Issued
**Chennai, November 12, 2024:** Chennai and its surrounding areas are bracing for heavy rainfall until Friday, November 15th, as the northeast monsoon continues to be active over Tamil Nadu. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai upgraded its weather warning to an orange alert, predicting very heavy rainfall (up to 20.4 cm) in Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu districts for the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Wednesday, November 13th.
The downpour, triggered by a low pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal off north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts, has already drenched several areas in and around Chennai, causing schools in the city to be closed for the day.
Ten other districts in north Tamil Nadu and the delta region, including Ranipet and Thanjavur, are also expected to experience heavy rainfall until Wednesday morning. The RMC forecasts scattered moderate rainfall on Wednesday, with 12 districts, including Chennai and surrounding areas, as well as Madurai and Tirunelveli, likely to receive heavy rain.
Moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms is expected in some areas of Chennai until Thursday. While the city will experience heavy downpours, the maximum temperature will remain at a pleasant 30 degrees Celsius for the next two days.
While the heavy rains have brought in marginal inflow to the five major reservoirs supplying drinking water to Chennai, they are currently at about 45% of their storage capacity.
