Thu Oct 17 05:04:41 UTC 2024: ## Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti Celebrated on October 17th: Schools and Banks Closed
**Bhopal, India:** The birth anniversary of Maharshi Valmiki, the revered author of the epic Ramayana, will be observed on October 17th this year. Schools and banks will be closed in observance of this important Hindu holiday.
Maharshi Valmiki, originally named Ratnakar, is revered for his profound scholarship and deep devotion. He is credited with composing the Ramayana, a timeless epic detailing the life of Lord Rama, and for providing shelter to Sita during her exile and educating her sons, Luv and Kush.
According to the Hindu calendar, Valmiki Jayanti falls on the full moon day of the Ashwin month. This year, the date begins at 8:40 PM on October 16th and ends at 4:55 PM on October 17th. However, as per Hindu tradition, the celebration of Valmiki Jayanti will be observed on Thursday, October 17th.
Valmiki’s transformation from a bandit to a sage is a story often recounted. Legend has it that he was a notorious robber who terrorized the forest until he encountered the sage Narada. Narada’s teachings touched Ratnakar’s heart, causing him to repent for his past sins. He then embarked on a rigorous penance, immersing himself in it so deeply that ants built a nest on his body, thus earning him the name “Valmiki,” which translates to “ant-hill.”
The creation of the Ramayana is also attributed to a divine intervention. Brahma, the creator god, instructed Valmiki to pen down the story of Lord Rama. It is said that a curse uttered by Valmiki on a hunter who killed a bird resulted in the spontaneous formation of a verse. Recognizing this as divine inspiration, Brahma instructed Valmiki to compose the epic in the form of verses.
Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti is a significant occasion that celebrates the contributions of a profound scholar and revered figure in Hindu mythology.
