Wed Oct 16 09:03:11 UTC 2024: ## New Zealand Pacer Ben Sears Ruled Out of India Test Series Due to Knee Injury
**Bengaluru, October 15 (PTI):** New Zealand’s hopes of a strong showing in the upcoming three-Test series against India have been dealt a blow with the news that right-arm pacer Ben Sears has been ruled out due to a knee injury. The opening Test is scheduled to begin in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
Sears’s participation in the series was uncertain after he experienced pain in his left knee during New Zealand’s recent tour of Sri Lanka. Scans revealed a meniscus tear, leading to medical consultations in an attempt to clear him for play. However, following medical advice, the decision was made to withdraw him from the series.
In his place, New Zealand has called up uncapped 30-year-old right-arm fast bowler Jacob Duffy, who is set to depart for India on Wednesday. Duffy has six ODIs and 14 T20Is under his belt for the Kiwis, and has claimed 299 wickets in 102 First-Class outings.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead expressed disappointment for Sears, who had made a strong start to his Test career. “We’re obviously disappointed for Ben who made a strong start to his Test career during the home summer and offers a genuine pace option,” Stead said in a statement.
However, Stead also highlighted the opportunity for Duffy, who has been around the Test squad previously. “It remains to be seen how long we’ll be without him for, but we’re hopeful his road to a full recovery will be a short one. It’s an exciting opportunity for Jacob who has been around the Test the squad before. With three Tests ahead of us he has every chance of making his Test debut.”
Stead further emphasized Duffy’s recent experience playing for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship, highlighting his potential to contribute to the team. “Jacob’s recent experience playing for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship certainly pushed his place. His performances in white-ball cricket for the Blackcaps have always been impressive and we’re confident he’ll be able to contribute if called upon,” he said.
