Wed Oct 16 12:42:35 UTC 2024: ## Diwali Bonanza: Government Announces DA Hike, MSP Increase for Employees and Farmers
**New Delhi, October 9, 2024:** Ahead of Diwali celebrations, the Indian government has announced two major decisions aimed at bolstering the economic well-being of government employees and farmers. The first decision involves a significant hike in Dearness Allowance (DA) for central government employees and pensioners, while the second introduces an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for six key rabi crops.
**DA Hike to Boost Employee Morale:** The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a 3% increase in DA and Dearness Relief, bringing the total DA to 53% of basic salary. This move is expected to benefit over 1 crore central government employees and pensioners. The DA is revised every six months based on the All India Consumer Price Index. The increased allowance will be effective from January and July, with the adjustments being made retrospectively. Notably, the DA hike announced on Wednesday will translate into a monthly increase of approximately ₹540 for entry-level government employees. Employees are also anticipated to receive arrears for July, August, and September.
**MSP Increase to Enhance Farmer Income:** In a separate announcement, the government unveiled an increase in the MSP for six key rabi crops, namely wheat, barley, chickpea, lentil, rapeseed/mustard, and sunflower. The MSP for wheat has been increased from ₹2275 per quintal to ₹2425 per quintal, while the MSP for barley has been raised from ₹1850 to ₹1980 per quintal. The MSP for chickpea, lentil, rapeseed/mustard, and sunflower has been increased to ₹5650, ₹6700, ₹5950, and ₹5940 per quintal respectively. This move is anticipated to benefit millions of farmers across the country and encourage increased production of these crops.
**State-Level Initiatives Add to Festive Cheer:** In a similar vein, the Chhattisgarh government announced a 4% increase in DA for state government employees, taking the total DA to 50% of basic salary. This increase will come into effect on October 1st, providing an additional boost to employee incomes ahead of Diwali.
These significant announcements, coinciding with the festive season, are likely to have a positive impact on the economic landscape, boosting consumer spending and contributing to overall economic growth.
