A champion of tribal rights and a vocal critic of government policies, Saibaba was known for his activism and was jailed for 10 years after being convicted under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for alleged Maoist links.

In 2017, a sessions court convicted Saibaba and five others, including a journalist and a Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student, for alleged Maoist links and for engaging in activities deemed to be waging war against the country.

Saibaba was released from prison in March this year after the Bombay High Court acquitted him in the case.

He was a former English professor at Ram Lal Anand College of Delhi University. Following his arrest in 2014, he was terminated from his position and his official accommodation was revoked.

Saibaba’s passing is mourned by his family, friends, and colleagues, who remember him as a dedicated scholar and activist. His contributions to tribal rights and his unwavering fight for justice will continue to inspire generations to come.
