Mon Oct 07 23:13:17 UTC 2024: ## Cholera Deaths Surge Globally, Reaching Record Highs in 2023

**Geneva, Switzerland** – The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a devastating surge in cholera deaths worldwide in 2023, with over 4,000 fatalities, a 71% increase compared to 2022. The number of reported cases also rose by 13%.

The increase in cholera outbreaks is attributed to a complex interplay of factors, including conflict, climate change, inadequate sanitation, poverty, and displacement. The geographical distribution of the disease also shifted significantly, with a dramatic rise in cases reported from Africa and a decline in the Middle East and Asia.

Of particular concern is the emergence of “community deaths,” occurring outside of health facilities, in multiple countries. This highlights a critical lack of access to treatment and the need for improved response mechanisms.

While Afghanistan reported the highest number of cases, several other countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, and Haiti also experienced significant outbreaks.

Despite the crisis, the WHO is actively responding by strengthening public health surveillance, case management, and prevention measures. The agency is also working to distribute vital medical supplies and vaccines.

However, the WHO emphasizes that safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene remain the most effective long-term solutions to end cholera outbreaks.
