**London** – The creators of the hit finance drama “Industry,” Mickey Down and Konrad Kay, have shed light on their approach to writing the complex and often ruthless character of Harper, played by Myha’la Herrold. The show follows a group of young graduates vying for coveted jobs in the competitive world of London finance, with Harper, Yasmin (Marisa Abela), and Robert (Harry Lawtey) at the forefront.
Down and Kay emphasize that they deliberately write about disadvantaged characters like Harper, a black woman navigating a challenging environment, with “love” and empathy. They acknowledge that factors like background, race, and gender can significantly impact an individual’s success, leading them to write about Harper’s struggles and triumphs with understanding.
“People throw a lot of words at these characters, insults sometimes,” admitted Down, “especially at Harper, saying she’s awful, she’s heinous, she’s selfish.” However, he stressed that they approach her character from a place of understanding: “We write her as a young black woman who has come from a disadvantaged background, who is ridiculously ambitious and will do everything to achieve her goals – and that is thrilling.”
“Industry,” which is currently airing its third season in the UK, has been renewed for a fourth season, promising even more insight into the cutthroat world of finance and the complex characters who inhabit it.
