**Washington, D.C.** – Vice President Kamala Harris has vowed to earn the votes of Black men, acknowledging the uphill battle ahead as a recent NAACP poll revealed growing support for Donald Trump among young Black men. This trend, if sustained, could significantly impact the upcoming election, according to political analysts.
Harris, facing criticism from some Black men due to her past as a prosecutor, will need to address concerns about her criminal justice record, argues Gevin Reynolds, a communications strategist and former speechwriter for the Vice President. He suggests a multi-pronged approach, including countering misinformation on social media, outlining a specific “Blueprint for Black Men” outlining her economic and social policies, and leveraging trusted local voices within Black communities.
“The Harris campaign must target them on social media with ads that set the record straight,” Reynolds says, highlighting the need to address concerns about her record. He suggests a “Blueprint for Black Men” package of policies addressing economic opportunity, mental health, education, and childcare, alongside engaging in direct dialogue with Black men across the country.
Reynolds emphasizes the importance of local organizers and influencers, such as barbers, pastors, educators, and coaches, in reaching out to Black men and building trust in Harris’s campaign.
“The Harris campaign should work with local organizers to identify those leaders and train them as surrogates,” Reynolds states. He also points to the need to address the disillusionment felt by some Black men, who have seen promises from Democratic leaders go unfulfilled.
Despite recent efforts by the Harris campaign to connect with Black men, including events in barbershops and churches, interviews on Black radio, and showcasing Black men in her Economic Opportunity Tour, the poll results demonstrate the need for continued efforts to address their concerns and build trust.
The upcoming election presents a critical opportunity for Harris to demonstrate her commitment to Black men and address their unique needs, argues Reynolds. By combating misinformation, outlining a clear policy agenda, and leveraging trusted voices within Black communities, he believes the Harris campaign can build the support needed to win over Black men in November.
