Kochi, India – Renowned Malayalam actress Kaviyoor Ponnamma passed away on Friday at a private hospital in Kochi. She was 79 years old. Ponnamma, known for her grace and finesse in portraying mother roles, had been undergoing treatment for age-related illnesses for the past month.
Ponnamma began her acting career in the early 1960s, making her debut at the tender age of 20. Notably, she played the role of a mother to veteran actor Sathyan in one of her early films. Throughout her illustrious career spanning over six decades, she starred in over 700 films, leaving an indelible mark on Malayalam cinema.
Her last film, “Aanum Pennum” (2021), an anthology of three short films, showcased her versatility and enduring talent. Ponnamma’s love for acting began in her youth, and she first graced the stage at the age of 14 in the play “Mooladhanam” by acclaimed playwright Thoppil Bhasi.
