ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has expressed concern over the increasing frequency of Russian and Chinese military activity near Alaska. He highlighted recent joint naval exercises by Russia and China in the Sea of Japan, as well as Russian aircraft operating in Alaska’s air defense identification zone.
The governor attributed the rise in military activity to “chess moves” and “probes” by Russia and China, potentially fueled by global instability and questioning of American resolve.
In response to these actions, the U.S. military has deployed 130 Army airborne soldiers with mobile rocket launchers to the Aleutian Islands in western Alaska. The strategic location of Alaska, just 55 miles from mainland Russia, makes it a crucial point for national security, particularly as Russia continues to strengthen its Arctic military capabilities.
Governor Dunleavy’s statements come as concerns grow about the potential for increased tensions and competition in the Arctic region, where both Russia and China are vying for greater influence. The U.S. military’s deployment to the Aleutian Islands underscores the importance of maintaining a strong presence in the region and deterring any potential aggression.
