**Delaware, US:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi will join leaders from Australia, Japan, and the United States at the annual Quad summit this weekend in Delaware. While discussions will touch on the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, maritime security, climate and clean energy, a key topic will be the “Cancer Moonshot Initiative” championed by US President Joe Biden.
The initiative, originally launched during the Obama administration, aims to accelerate progress in preventing, detecting, and treating cancer. The focus this time is on a program within the “Cancer Moonshot” known as the “Quad Cancer Moonshot Initiative,” specifically targeting cervical cancer.
This initiative aims to expand cervical cancer preventive measures, increase HPV vaccinations, and improve treatment options. This is crucial as cervical cancer remains the fourth most common cancer among women globally, according to the WHO.
India, which is facing an increasing epidemic of non-communicable diseases, including cancer, is set to benefit greatly from the “Cancer Moonshot” program. The initiative is expected to foster collaboration between the US and India through the “US-India Cancer Dialogue”, enhancing research and innovation in areas such as AI-driven cancer care, novel therapies, and cost-effective treatments.
The Quad Cancer Initiative, spearheaded by US Ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy, will build on Australia’s progress in combatting cervical cancer, which has set a goal to eliminate the disease by 2035.
The upcoming Quad Summit, to be held on Saturday, will see PM Modi join US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. India is slated to host the next Quad Summit.
