**Kochi, September 20, 2024:** Renowned Malayalam actress Kaviyoor Ponnamma passed away on Friday at the age of 80, leaving a void in the hearts of moviegoers and theatre enthusiasts across Kerala.

Ponnamma, who had been battling cancer since May, was admitted to a private hospital in Kochi on September 3rd for follow-up treatment. Her condition deteriorated on Thursday, leading to her demise on Friday.

Known for her heartwarming portrayal of mothers and grandmothers, Ponnamma began her acting journey in the early 1960s. Her transition from theatre to film catapulted her to fame, with her nuanced performances earning her four State Awards for Best Supporting Actress.

She graced both the silver screen and television, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of Keralites with her maternal roles.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan expressed their condolences, highlighting Ponnamma’s significant contributions to Malayalam cinema, theatre, and television. The Chief Minister praised her association with the Kerala People’s Arts Club (KPAC) in the early days of her career, while the Leader of the Opposition lauded her ability to embody the quintessential “mother figure” for Malayalam filmgoers.

Ponnamma’s body will be kept at the Kalamassery Municipal Town Hall from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday for the public to pay their last respects. Her cremation will take place at her home in Aluva.
