**Kochi:** Renowned actress Kaviyoor Ponnamma passed away on [Date] at a private hospital in Kochi. She was 79.

Ponnamma had been receiving treatment for health issues and was in critical condition for the past few days. The veteran actress had taken a break from acting and was living a retired life at her residence in Karimaaloor, North Paravur.

Born in Kaviyoor, Pathanamthitta, Ponnamma began her journey in the arts as a singer in plays by Prabha Arts. She made her acting debut in the KPAC play “Mooladhanam.” Ponnamma considered Thoppil Bhasi as her mentor in acting. She was married to filmmaker Maniswamy. Their daughter, Bindu, lives in the US.

Ponnamma entered the film industry in 1962 with the movie “Sree Rama Pattabhishekam.” She was a four-time recipient of the Kerala State Film Award for Best Supporting Actress, winning in 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1994. She is also remembered for her popular songs in films and plays, including “Ambike Jagadambike” from “Theerthayathra” and the famous stage songs “Poocara Pootharumo” and “Vellilam Kattilolicchu Kalikkuvan.”
