**LONDON** – Many pensioners aged 70 and over could be missing out on hundreds of pounds in unclaimed benefits and discounts every month, according to recent reports. While the state pension is widely known, other benefits and age-related discounts remain untapped by many retirees.
One particularly significant benefit is the War Widow or Widower’s Pension, which can provide a weekly payment of £184.95, or £739 a month, to eligible individuals over 70. To qualify, their spouse or civil partner must have died as a result of their service in the Armed Forces before April 6, 2005.
Other benefits for pensioners include free TV licences for those aged 75 and over, saving £159 per year. Military pension benefits, including the War Pension Scheme and the War Widow or Widower’s Pension, are also available, with varying rates based on individual circumstances.
The War Pension Scheme offers payments ranging from a lump sum gratuity to a weekly or monthly pension based on the severity of service-related injuries. Veterans of the 1914 and 1939 wars may be eligible for a weekly pension of £140, increasing with age to £200 for centenarians.
This news comes amidst concerns about pensioners struggling to make ends meet, particularly after the recent reduction in the Winter Fuel Payment. With numerous benefits and discounts available, experts urge pensioners to research their eligibility and ensure they are receiving all the financial support they are entitled to.
