New York City, NY – Designer Rachel Scott, the CFDA Emerging Designer of the Year and a native of Jamaica, presented her Spring 2025 collection for Diotima on Monday, showcasing a vision of Caribbean culture and artisanal craftsmanship. The collection, which featured an expanded wardrobe including denim and footwear, was met with resounding applause.
Scott’s signature handwork – faggoting, crochet, broderie anglaise, and intarsia – were cleverly incorporated into everyday pieces like jeans, linen blouses, and pencil skirts, while also gracing luxurious georgette maxiskirts and dresses. This blend of traditional techniques with modern silhouettes resonated deeply with the audience.
The collection drew inspiration from the seaside landscape of Scott’s heritage, reflecting the tension between the sensual energy of dancehall culture and the tradition of Sunday church. This dynamic was evident in the collection’s play on revealing and concealing, embellished and humble. A highlight was a sexy burlap tunic tank dress, pants, and clutch bag, all adorned with oyster shell-like paillettes that clinked with every movement.
Knit gowns with low-cut fronts and sides offered a taste of sexy sophistication, while other pieces like a mock turtleneck with a crochet collar, a cream georgette short trench trimmed in fringe, and silk slips showcased a subtle touch of Scott’s handwork.
The crowd was captivated, with even the Bergdorf Goodman team, which already carries Diotima, expressing their admiration for Scott’s own outfit. “She has an authenticity about her and her roots and bringing that into her work in a way that’s not appropriating,” remarked Linda Fargo, Bergorf Goodman senior vice president fashion.
Scott’s collection continues to grow, with 31 looks – a 30% increase from the previous season. Despite the challenges faced by young designers, Scott remains resolute. “We haven’t broken even yet but are probably going to in the new year, which is great considering we don’t have any outside investment,” she said.
Diotima’s Spring 2025 collection signals a promising future for the brand, demonstrating Scott’s ability to create unique pieces that are both beautiful and wearable, with a distinct Caribbean flair that is sure to resonate with fashion enthusiasts.
