Kochi Local Elections: LDF Suffers Major Setback, Pockets of Strength Remain
KOCHI, December 16, 2025 – The Left Democratic Front (LDF) experienced a significant defeat in the recent Kochi Corporation local body elections, though the impact varied across different areas within the city. While the overall results were unfavorable, the LDF demonstrated relative strength in the Palluruthy area committee, securing nine of its eleven divisions. Some success was also seen in the Kochi area committee, where seven of the twenty-one divisions returned LDF candidates.
However, the LDF faced substantial losses in the Thrikkakara and Ernakulam area committees, winning only two of nineteen and four of twenty-five divisions, respectively. Sources within the LDF attributed the setback to an anti-government sentiment. However, they also suggested that the local leadership’s failure to effectively communicate the accomplishments of the previous LDF council and flaws in candidate selection, particularly in Kochi, may have contributed to the poor performance.
Notably, in certain divisions, the BJP’s vote share impacted the outcome, benefiting the CPI(M) in Ponnurunni East.
