Person of Interest Detained After Shooting at Brown University Wounds Nine
Providence, RI – Police in Providence have detained a “person of interest” in connection with a shooting at Brown University on Saturday that left nine people wounded, seven critically. The incident triggered a massive manhunt involving over 400 law enforcement personnel, including the FBI and ATF.
Colonel Oscar Perez of the Providence Police Department announced the detention at a Sunday news conference, stating that officers are currently not seeking any other individuals in connection to the shooting. The identity of the person of interest has not been released.
The shooting occurred Saturday at a building where students were taking exams. A suspect armed with a firearm opened fire, sending the campus into lockdown and prompting students to hide for hours.
Brown University initially issued a shelter-in-place order, which was lifted on Sunday. However, police presence remains heavy, and access to parts of the campus, particularly around Minden Hall, are still restricted as the area is considered an active crime scene.
Officials had earlier released a video of a male suspect, possibly in his 30s and dressed in black, but it’s unconfirmed if the suspect is the person of interest. Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara previously stated that the gunman may have been wearing a mask, and investigators recovered shell casings from the scene.
The motive for the shooting remains under investigation. This incident marks the second deadly gun attack at a U.S. university this week, following a shooting at Kentucky State University on Tuesday. The Gun Violence Archive reports 389 mass shootings in the U.S. this year, including at least six at schools.
