Sat Dec 13 12:38:17 UTC 2025: ## Peace Talks Stalled as Attacks Escalate in Ukraine and Russia

Kyiv, Ukraine – Hopes for a near-term ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine appear increasingly dim as both sides report intensified attacks. Ukrainian energy facilities have been targeted, leaving thousands without power, while Russia claims a Ukrainian drone strike resulted in two fatalities on its territory.

Overnight, Russian forces reportedly damaged over a dozen civilian facilities in Ukraine, disrupting power in seven regions. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, stating that they demonstrate Russia’s continued intention to “destroy our state and inflict maximum pain on our people,” further stating they prove Moscow is not interested in ending the conflict. Parts of the Kherson region, including its capital, were also left without power, according to regional head Oleksandr Prokudin.

Meanwhile, Russian authorities in the Saratov region reported a drone attack that killed two people and damaged a residential building. The attack also reportedly damaged a kindergarten and clinic. The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed to have shot down 41 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory overnight.

The escalating attacks come amid ongoing, US-led negotiations aimed at brokering a peace settlement. Kremlin advisor Yury Ushakov recently stated that Russian forces would remain in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine even after a potential peace agreement, a condition unacceptable to Ukraine.

Germany is scheduled to host President Zelenskyy on Monday for talks, as European leaders attempt to advance peace negotiations. The primary obstacle to a breakthrough remains the status of Ukrainian territory currently occupied by Russian forces. Negotiations on security guarantees for Kyiv that would be acceptable to Moscow also continue.

Adding to the tensions, recent hostilities in the Black Sea have intensified, with Russian forces attacking Ukrainian ports and damaging Turkish-owned vessels. An attack on Odesa resulted in grain silos catching fire at the port. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned against turning the Black Sea into an “area of confrontation” and called for a “limited ceasefire” targeting ports and energy facilities. He also noted Turkiye controls the Bosphorus Strait, a key passage for transporting Ukrainian grain and Russian oil towards the Mediterranean.

With both sides trading accusations and intensifying attacks, the path towards a peaceful resolution to the nearly four-year conflict remains uncertain.
