Lionel Messi’s India Tour Marred by Fan Frustration and Organizational Chaos

Kolkata, India – Lionel Messi’s highly anticipated “GOAT India Tour” has been overshadowed by widespread fan disappointment and organizational failures, sparking outrage and prompting a government investigation. The three-day tour, intended to showcase the Argentinian football icon ahead of the 2026 World Cup defense, began in Kolkata with chaotic scenes as thousands of fans with tickets were unable to get a clear view of Messi.

Reports indicate that many ticket holders were unable to see Messi in person or even on the stadium’s big screens, leading to frustration and anger. Some attendees resorted to throwing bottles and attempting to vandalize the stadium.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued a public apology to Messi and disappointed fans, expressing her shock at the “mismanagement” of the event. Banerjee promised a thorough investigation to determine responsibility and prevent future occurrences.

“I am deeply disturbed and shocked by the mismanagement witnessed today at Salt Lake Stadium,” Banerjee wrote on social media. “A committee will be constituted to conduct a detailed enquiry into the incident, fix responsibility, and recommend measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.”

Messi, accompanied by teammates Luis Suarez and Rodrigo De Paul, was also scheduled to visit Hyderabad and Mumbai before concluding his tour in New Delhi. Earlier on Saturday, Messi remotely unveiled a 21-meter statue of himself in Kolkata.

The incident casts a shadow on India’s efforts to promote football. The Indian Super League (ISL) faces instability due to disputes between the federation and its commercial partner, even prompting Bengaluru FC to halt player and staff salaries.
