Uttar Pradesh Seeks Extension for Electoral Roll Revision Amid Verification Challenges
Lucknow, December 11, 2025 – The Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Navdeep Rinwa, announced Wednesday that the state has requested the Election Commission of India for a two-week extension to complete the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The extension is aimed at allowing district election officers to thoroughly re-verify entries regarding deceased, shifted, and untraceable voters.
While 99.24% of enumeration forms have been digitized, a significant 18.85% remain “unverified,” comprising 2.91 crore entries including deceased voters, voters who have permanently shifted, duplicate voters, those who have not returned their forms, and absent voters. The CEO noted that over 80% of the forms have been returned with signatures, and mapping of received forms with the 2003 voter list has surpassed 76%.
Mr. Rinwa urged all recognized political parties to assist in verifying entries, emphasizing the need to assist voters whose names are missing and encouraging youth turning 18 on January 1, 2026, to register. Booth-level officers are slated to provide lists of verified voters to booth-level agents by December 12 for uploading to the CEO and district websites. The SIR exercise has been underway since November 4, 2025. This announcement comes amid earlier reports of attacks on election officers and at least one death of an election worker.
