Controversial Bollywood Action Epic “Dhurandhar” Hits U.S. Theaters Nationwide
LOS ANGELES, CA – Aditya Dhar’s star-studded Bollywood action film, “Dhurandhar” (“Stalwart”), is now playing in U.S. theaters nationwide. The film, inspired by “incredible true events,” follows an Indian military operative who goes undercover in Pakistan in the mid-2000s, adopting the identity of Hamza Ali Mazari (played by Ranveer Singh). As Hamza navigates a world of crime, political intrigue, and international terrorism, he becomes deeply embedded within a local mafia network, grappling with complicated loyalties and brutal violence.
While “Dhurandhar” boasts impressive production value, strong performances, and thrilling action sequences, its release has been met with controversy due to its jingoistic themes and potential Islamophobic undertones. The film blends fictional characters with figures inspired by real individuals, like Akshaye Khanna’s intense Rehman Dakait, based on Karachi gangster and family man, and Sanjay Dutt’s Chaudhary Aslam, based on a revered Pakistani police officer but portrayed in the movie as a corrupt opportunist. The film’s use of archival footage and references to real-world terror attacks, including the 2008 Mumbai attacks, raises ethical concerns, drawing comparisons to propaganda tactics.
Critics are divided, with some praising the film’s technical prowess and compelling narrative, while others condemn its potentially harmful political messaging. One reviewer notes, “Bollywood gangster saga Dhurandhar walks a fine line between raucous entertainment and hateful propaganda. With more blood and guts than a slaughterhouse, it’s one of the most viciously enthralling films this year, following a fictitious undercover operative influencing real historical events, like Forrest Gump with a Kalashnikov.”
“Dhurandhar” is a brutal and unflinching thriller that challenges viewers to confront its complex and often disturbing themes. Be warned: It is not for the faint of heart.
