CHENNAI, December 8, 2025 – The Election Commission of India has appointed four IAS officers as special roll observers to oversee the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu, with January 1, 2026, set as the qualifying date for voters. This move aims to ensure a comprehensive and accurate voter list ahead of upcoming elections.

Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik emphasized the crucial role of these observers, stating they will ensure strict adherence to the Commission’s guidelines. The goal is to guarantee that all eligible citizens are included in the electoral rolls, while preventing the inclusion of ineligible individuals.

The assigned officers and their respective districts are:

  • Raman Kumar: Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupathur, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, and Kallakurichi.
  • Kuldip Narayan: Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Tiruppur, the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Krishnagiri, and Dharmapuri.
  • Neeraj Kharwal: Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Thanjavur.
  • Vijay Nehra: Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Madurai, Theni, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Kanniyakumari.

The special roll observers will be responsible for overseeing all stages of the SIR process, including the enumeration phase, the claims and objections period, and the final publication of the electoral rolls. The Election Commission’s focus on accuracy and inclusivity underlines its commitment to a fair and transparent electoral process in Tamil Nadu.
