New York, NY – December 5, 2025 – Skywatchers across the globe were treated to a stunning celestial display on December 4th as the “Cold Moon,” the final full moon of the year, reached its peak. This year’s Cold Moon was particularly special, marking the third in a series of “Supermoons” where the moon reaches its closest point to Earth.
As a Supermoon, December’s full moon appeared noticeably larger and brighter than usual, captivating photographers and amateur astronomers alike. The Cold Moon gets its name from the typically frigid temperatures that accompany its rise in early winter.
Photographers worldwide captured the moon’s ethereal glow as it ascended above the horizon. Space.com’s Daisy Dobrijevic photographed the moon from Tenerife, noting how it “lit up a stunning landscape.” Kwong Liew captured a stunning composite image of the moon rising behind the Salesforce Tower in San Francisco. The event offered a dazzling spectacle and a fitting conclusion to the 2025 lunar calendar. From Mexico City to Lisbon to London, stunning images flooded social media.
If you missed this spectacle, don’t fret! The lunar disk will still appear full in the coming nights. Plus, skywatchers can look forward to another Supermoon on January 3, 2026.
