Sun Dec 07 07:43:58 UTC 2025: Sudan on the Brink of Famine as Fighting Blocks Aid, WFP Warns

Khartoum, Sudan – Millions of Sudanese are facing starvation as ongoing conflict prevents vital aid from reaching them, the World Food Programme (WFP) warned this weekend. WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau described the situation as a “massive crisis,” stating that 20 million people are acutely food insecure, with 6 million facing starvation.

The WFP is currently assisting 5 million people, but Skau emphasized this is not enough. Violence is specifically hindering access to populations in conflict zones like el-Fasher and Babnusa.

Skau’s warning echoes concerns from the UN’s human rights chief regarding potential mass atrocities in the Kordofan region, where fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is intensifying.

The situation is further complicated by accusations of atrocities committed by both sides. Reports indicate a deadly RSF attack on a pre-school in Kalogi locality, South Kordofan, resulting in over 100 deaths, including dozens of children. The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the attack as a “full-fledged massacre.” Additionally, the Sudan Doctors Network has documented multiple cases of rape committed by RSF forces against women in al-Dabbah, prompting strong condemnation and warnings that the international community’s silence is encouraging such acts.

Meanwhile, both sides accuse each other of hindering aid efforts. The RSF claims the SAF bombed the Adre border crossing with Chad, a crucial route for humanitarian aid, while the SAF accuses the RSF of shelling a power station in al-Damazin, cutting off electricity.

The UN estimates that the violence in Sudan has displaced 9 million people and left over 30 million in need of aid. The WFP and other humanitarian organizations are urging the international community to step up diplomatic efforts and prevent further disaster in the war-torn nation.
