Sun Dec 07 16:32:17 UTC 2025: ## Tiruchi Residents Urge Corporation to Formalize 80-Feet Road as Vending Zone Amidst Encroachment Woes

Tiruchi, India – December 7, 2025 – Residents of Tiruchi are calling on the Tiruchi Corporation to establish the 80-Feet Road in Thillai Nagar as a designated vending zone, citing persistent encroachments that render footpaths unusable and exacerbate traffic congestion. Despite previous efforts to clear the sidewalks, commercial establishments, roadside eateries, and vehicles continue to occupy pedestrian spaces, undermining the goals of the Smart Cities Mission’s pedestrian platform project launched in 2020.

The project, which aimed to create a safe and walkable corridor with upgraded footpaths, underground utility systems, enhanced lighting, and a beautified center median, has largely failed to improve pedestrian mobility due to ongoing encroachments. Road users report that unauthorized parking significantly reduces road width, leading to frequent traffic bottlenecks.

“Due to encroachments and the presence of a center median, the width of the road has shrunk considerably over the years, posing a safety threat to pedestrians and motorists,” said Roshan, a local motorist.

Councillor K. Sureshkumar of Ward 23 emphasized the need for a formal vending zone. “Street vending is essential for many livelihoods, but the current arrangement is chaotic. If the Corporation develops this road as an organized vending zone, it will help both vendors and residents,” he stated. The proposal seeks to create a more organized and regulated environment for street vendors while simultaneously reclaiming pedestrian spaces and improving traffic flow along the busy 80-Feet Road. The Corporation has yet to respond to the residents’ request.
