Sat Dec 06 00:40:24 UTC 2025: Trump Receives Inaugural FIFA Peace Prize Amid Controversy

Washington, D.C. – In a move sparking both celebration and controversy, U.S. President Donald Trump was awarded FIFA’s newly created peace prize at the draw for the 2026 men’s football World Cup held in Washington, D.C. Trump, a vocal advocate for a Nobel Peace Prize, accepted the award from FIFA President Gianni Infantino, calling it “one of the great honors of my life.”

Infantino praised Trump’s efforts to broker a ceasefire in the conflict in Gaza, stating, “This is your prize, this is your peace prize.” The ceremony, attended by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, featured a game-show style draw for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

The decision to award Trump has drawn sharp criticism, with Human Rights Watch and other groups questioning the transparency of the selection process and citing Trump’s policies, including military build-ups, hardline migration crackdowns, and controversial remarks about immigrants. Despite these concerns, FIFA celebrated Trump for resolving the war in Gaza and trying to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The 2026 World Cup, set to be held from June 11 to July 19, will feature a record 104 matches across 16 host cities.
