Sabres Aim to Replicate Dominant Performance Against Jets in Winnipeg
WINNIPEG – Riding the momentum of a decisive 5-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets in Buffalo on Monday, the Sabres look to recapture that success as they face the Jets again tonight at Canada Life Centre at 7 p.m. EST.
Buffalo is aiming to rebound from a disappointing 5-2 loss to the Flyers on Wednesday, the first game of their six-game road trip. After allowing 3 goals in 59 seconds to the Flyers, the Sabres are seeking a quick turnaround, with Tage Thompson emphasizing the need to “shake off” the loss.
The Sabres will look to mirror Monday’s winning formula, which included building an early lead, winning the faceoff battle, and successfully containing Winnipeg’s top line. On Monday, they held Scheifele, Connor and Vilardi to one goal and limited their shots.
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen will start in net, after his impressive performance against the Jets on Monday. Jordan Greenway also returns to the lineup.
A key to Buffalo’s recent offensive success has been the active involvement of their defensemen, who have combined for 15 goals this season, tied for sixth most in the NHL. Bowen Byram highlighted the forwards’ ability to find the defensemen in the offensive zone, creating additional threats.
The Jets are struggling, having lost five of their last seven games. The Sabres will hope to capitalize on the absence of goalie Connor Hellebuyck. His replacement, Eric Comrie, was pulled in the first period of Monday’s game.
