Jasprit Bumrah Turns 32: From Humble Beginnings to Bowling Superstar
Ahmedabad, India – December 6, 2024 – Indian cricket sensation Jasprit Bumrah celebrates his 32nd birthday today, marking another year in a career that has redefined fast bowling in India. Rising from humble beginnings, Bumrah has become a household name, inspiring comparisons to batting legends Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli in terms of impact and popularity.
Born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Bumrah faced early adversity with the loss of his father at the age of five. Supported by his mother and sister, he honed his skills in club cricket, developing a unique slinging action and deadly yorkers.
His journey took a turn in 2012 when Mumbai Indians coach John Wright, scouting for talent, spotted Bumrah during a club match. Impressed by his raw talent, Mumbai Indians secured Bumrah in the IPL auction, paving the way for his domestic debut for Gujarat in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Bumrah’s IPL debut saw him take the prized wicket of Virat Kohli, signaling the arrival of a new force in Indian cricket. Despite limited appearances in his debut season, Bumrah quickly became a mainstay in the Mumbai Indians squad, contributing to five IPL title victories.
His international breakthrough came in 2016 during India’s tour of Australia. Initially selected for the T20 squad, a last-minute flight change led to Bumrah’s ODI debut, where he impressed with a two-wicket haul. He continued his success in the T20 series, becoming the highest wicket-taker and securing a series win for India.
Since then, Bumrah has solidified his position as a world-class bowler, earning accolades across all formats of the game. He is the only player to have achieved the number one ranking in Test, T20, and ODI cricket. He was instrumental in India’s T20 World Cup victory earlier this year, earning the Player of the Tournament award for his outstanding performance.
Off the field, Bumrah married sports presenter Sanjana Ganesan in 2021, and the couple welcomed their son, Angad, in 2023.
As Jasprit Bumrah turns 32, the cricket world celebrates his remarkable journey and eagerly anticipates the next chapter in his illustrious career. Today also marks the birthdays of fellow Indian cricketers Ravindra Jadeja, Karun Nair, Shreyas Iyer, and RP Singh, along with international stars like Andrew Flintoff and Glenn Phillips.
