Thu Nov 20 23:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Amazon Begins Distributing Refunds in Landmark FTC Settlement
WASHINGTON – Amazon has begun issuing automatic refunds to eligible customers as part of a billion-dollar settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Payments started on November 12th and will continue until December 24th.
The refunds, potentially reaching a maximum of $51, are being distributed to Prime members who the FTC alleges were tricked into signing up for the service and faced undue difficulty in canceling their subscriptions. The landmark settlement, totaling $2.5 billion, came after the FTC accused Amazon of employing deceptive “subscription traps” designed to manipulate consumers.
“The evidence showed that Amazon used sophisticated subscription traps designed to manipulate consumers into enrolling in Prime and then made it exceedingly hard for consumers to end their subscription,” FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson stated upon announcing the settlement. He emphasized the goal of both compensating consumers and preventing future deceptive practices, saying, “We are putting billions of dollars back into Americans’ pockets, and making sure Amazon never does this again.”
While Amazon maintains it was confident it would have prevailed in court, the company chose to settle to avoid a lengthy and potentially costly legal battle. Amazon has admitted no wrongdoing in the case.
Customers eligible for automatic refunds do not need to take any action at this time. The FTC will announce a claims process next year for those who qualify but do not receive an automatic payment during this initial distribution period.
The FTC will provide updates regarding the claims process when it becomes available.
