Northeast Braces for Up to 16 Inches of Snow as Winter Storms Slam Region

New York, NY – The Northeast is being hit hard by an early-season snowstorm, with the National Weather Service (NWS) issuing winter storm warnings and advisories across multiple states. As of Monday morning, parts of Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, and Maine are under alert, with snowfall totals expected to reach up to 16 inches in some areas by Monday evening.

NWS meteorologist Eric Myskowski told Newsweek that the storm began Sunday morning and intensified overnight. “The snowfall totals are on the high side for this early in the season,” Myskowski said.

Vermont is expected to see the highest accumulations, particularly in the NWS Burlington forecast region, where 10 to 16 inches are possible on northwestern slopes. Northern Herkimer County in New York could see up to 14 inches of additional snow.

Gusty winds are compounding the problem, creating blowing snow and reduced visibility, making travel conditions hazardous. Lake-effect snow is also expected to impact parts of Pennsylvania and New York.

The NWS has issued urgent warnings to drivers:

  • NWS Buffalo, New York: “Periods of snow will result in snow-covered roads and limited visibilities. Slow down and use caution while driving.”
  • NWS Albany, New York: “Roads will likely become slick and hazardous…Visibilities may drop below one mile in isolated locations…Travel could be difficult.”
  • NWS Burlington, Vermont: “If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.”

While many alerts are set to expire Monday night, some could remain in effect until Tuesday morning. Residents across the Northeast are advised to closely monitor local weather updates and exercise extreme caution if traveling during the storm.

This winter blast comes as other parts of the U.S., including the West Coast and the Intermountain West, are also bracing for significant snowfall, and the Midwest is facing the possibility of a wintry mix, impacting millions nationwide.
