Commanders Cut Kicker Matt Gay After Costly Misses

ASHBURN, VA – The Washington Commanders have released kicker Matt Gay, the team announced Monday, ending his tenure after a string of inconsistent performances and critical misses. The move comes on the heels of Sunday’s 16-13 overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins in Madrid, where Gay missed two field goal attempts, including a potential game-winning 56-yarder at the end of regulation.

Gay, who signed with the Commanders ahead of the 2025 season, struggled to find consistency, converting just 13 of 19 field goal attempts (68.4%) during his time in Washington. Injuries also hampered his season.

“The performance, you’ve got to have it,” said Commanders coach Dan Quinn. “We wanted it to work long term with Matt. It wasn’t (about) one game.”

Gay’s struggles proved costly. After his late-game miss against Miami, the door was left open for Dolphins kicker Riley Patterson, who successfully converted a 29-yard field goal in overtime to secure the victory for Miami and extend Washington’s losing streak to six games.

Gay finished the game 2-of-4 on field goal attempts. The Commanders have not yet announced a replacement.
