Mon Nov 17 07:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Navi Mumbai Airport Set for Christmas Day Take-Off, Poised to Ease Congestion
Navi Mumbai, India – The highly anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is on track to begin operations on December 25th, Christmas Day, heralding a new era of aviation capacity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). This makes MMR the first urban area in India to be served by two commercial airports.
While authorities have yet to make a formal announcement, airline schedules confirm the opening date. The new airport, inaugurated in October, promises to alleviate congestion at the existing Mumbai Airport (BOM) and provide passengers with greater choice and improved regional connectivity.
NMIA will initially operate with a single runway and a terminal capable of handling 20 million passengers annually. Future expansion plans include additional terminals and runways, allowing for modular growth and establishing NMIA as a major aviation hub for western India.
Akasa Air has emerged as the first airline to publicly commit to the new airport, announcing direct flights to Delhi, Goa, Kochi, and Ahmedabad starting December 25th. The airline will launch a special inaugural flight to Delhi, with fares around ₹6,000, on Christmas Day.
NMIA will initially operate on a 12-hour schedule, beginning at 8 AM, allowing for a phased operational rollout. Other airlines, including IndiGo and Air India Express, are expected to announce their plans soon, with IndiGo reportedly planning 36 flights connecting 15 cities.
Passengers will now have the option of choosing between Mumbai Airport (BOM) and Navi Mumbai Airport (NMI) when booking flights, mirroring the two-airport system found in many major global cities. This shift is expected to redistribute traffic and significantly reduce travel time for residents of Navi Mumbai and the eastern suburbs.
The launch of NMIA is expected to reshape connectivity, boost economic activity, and enhance logistics efficiency across the MMR. The airport’s opening marks a transformative milestone for Maharashtra’s aviation landscape.
