Koothattukulam Faces Upcoming Elections Amidst History of Political Turmoil
KOCHI, India – November 17, 2025 – The municipality of Koothattukulam in Kerala is gearing up for local body elections, but the upcoming vote is overshadowed by a long history of political instability. Since becoming a municipality a decade ago, Koothattukulam has seen six different chairpersons, none of whom have completed a full five-year term.
The shifting allegiances of independent councilors have often determined the balance of power. In the 2015 elections, neither the United Democratic Front (UDF) nor the Left Democratic Front (LDF) secured a clear majority, giving independent members considerable influence.
The last term has been particularly turbulent. A CPI(M) councilor, Kala Raju, accused a party leader of forcing her to undersell her property to clear debts. The situation escalated when Ms. Raju was allegedly abducted by party members to prevent her from voting in a no-confidence motion. This incident led to a police investigation and charges against several party activists. The UDF eventually gained control through another no-confidence vote, with Ms. Raju defecting to their side.
As elections approach, the UDF, LDF, and National Democratic Alliance are all working to finalize their candidates for the newly expanded 26 wards. The UDF will consist of the Congress, Kerala Congress (Jacob), and Kerala Congress. The LDF slate will include CPI(M), CPI, Kerala Congress (M) and NCP. The BJP is expected to contest most seats in the municipality as part of the National Democratic Alliance. It remains to be seen whether the upcoming elections will bring much-needed stability to Koothattukulam’s local government.
