Tiny Tsunami Waves Hit Japan After Offshore Earthquake
TOKYO, November 9, 2025 – Minor tsunami waves reached Japan’s northern Pacific coast on Sunday following an offshore earthquake near the Iwate prefecture. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported the first wave hit Miyako at 5:37 p.m. local time, but was too small to be measured. Waves of up to 20cm were later observed in ports in Kuji and Ofunato, with smaller waves detected elsewhere in Iwate.
The earthquake struck around 5:03 p.m., initially estimated at magnitude 6.7 by the Japanese agency before being revised to 6.9. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 6.8. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued and later lifted a tsunami advisory.
The initial quake was followed by several aftershocks ranging from magnitude 4.6 to 6.3. Earlier in the day, six other offshore quakes occurred in the same region, but were not felt on land and did not trigger any advisories.
Masashi Kiyomoto, an official at the meteorological agency, warned of the potential for stronger earthquakes in the coming days, citing a series of seismic activities in the area.
The event stirs memories of the devastating 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami of 2011, which resulted in approximately 18,500 deaths and the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster. Japan, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences approximately 1,500 earthquakes annually.
